i don't know if i can keep my flat. damn the government and their policies. it's just so upsetting. did you know that UNMARRIED foreigners who are prs can buy flats if they're above 21? they can buy flats with their siblings. and we citizens have to wait till we're bloody 35. what? we do not need our own fucking space? we don't need our own house, our own room? this is damn pathetic. no wonder everyone's migrating. i can't even own a flat in my own country. what public housing, if i bought it on the private market? FUCK IT. they better change the damn rules already because people are NOT getting married. they have unconsciously bred a whole generation of infantile, childish men with no backbone, can't accept responsibility and can't leave their parents' homes. they can't grow up and they don't know how to do things on their own. life's just easy. i'm glad my father is a foreigner who believes that his children should just move out and make their own lives. FUCK IT. i am soooo pissed. now, i rather be a fucking pr so i can take over the flat with my sister. FUCK FUCK FUCK. no wonder people are unsympathetic to that mp that got set on fire. desperation is such a powerful force.

just a perfect day,
drink sangria in the park,
and then later, when it gets dark,
we go home.
just a perfect day,
feed animals in the zoo
then later, a movie, too,
and then home.

oh it's such a perfect day,
i'm glad i spent it with you.
oh such a perfect day,
you just keep me hanging on,
you just keep me hanging on.

just a perfect day,
problems all left alone,
weekenders on our own.
it's such fun.
just a perfect day,
you made me forget myself.
i thought i was someone else,
someone good.

oh it's such a perfect day,
i'm glad i spent it with you.
oh such a perfect day,
you just keep me hanging on,
you just keep me hanging on.

i don't know what i did, but all my photos are backwards. is a silly cat. here's one of my fav buys from bangkok. a beige bcbg max azria shirt.

my second favourite buy - grey top with cut-outs from thai design brand, greyhound. you can read more about greyhound in my previous entry. i couldn't get a decent photo of the greyhound parachute skirt, which is also my second-favourite buy... but i absolutely love this top.

oh and my absolute star buy of the trip - second hand ferragamos in extremely good condition. this yummy pair cost me only $15. time spent scouring chatuchak market for this gem - 4 hours. i'm such a shoe whore now.

taking a break at chatuchak. i wear grey cotton blouse with ruffled sleeves from topshop and baby blue plastic necklace from h&m. i forgot how fun chatuchak was. my last trip to bangkok was almost 6 years ago. things are still as cheap and there's always that adventure to find gems.

here's min contemplating what to buy next at chatuchak.

at the tcdc (thailand creative and design centre) gallery in emporium. current exhibition, perishable beauty, was pretty interesting. here's a close-up on how much cosmetic procedures cost in various countries such as south korea.

whitesp ce is a small contermporary art gallery at lido. quite an interesting exhibition going on. pity the space was extremely small. a lot of potential in these curious spaces.

you can find the artgorillas gallery next to whitesp ce at lido. i like these small art spaces popping out in the middle of shopping centres, where you least expect them.

bohliao self-shot while waiting for the hammie. you can see the bangkok skyline at the back. we stayed at the banyan tree bangkok and our club suite was at the 58th floor. nice. i'm wearing a polka-dot blouse from h&m. my grin is so toothy... my parents never made braces for me. not fair.

the suite was really comfortable and i slept very well. i had a luxurious soak in the bathtub. they had bath salts, bath oils etc. shioks.

back to our first night in bangkok. we met xinyi and her bf, paa, for dinner near the victory monument. here's us having dubious candy-looking drinks.

at the thai restaurant. it was nice to meet up with xin xin. her thai is damn good lah. xin xin, thanks for bringing us to this yummy restaurant. damn good food plus beer for only $24! my fav dish was Kung Chae Naam Plaa, or raw prawns, eaten sashimi-style. bestest... i love raw seafood.

and finally the first-last photo. xin xin and paa (how to spell ah?). aren't they kawaii? hehe.

something to lust over - greyhound - one of thailand's top design brands. check out the collection page for droolicious dresses, skirts, blouses and everything a girl wants.

i was lucky to walk into the store when they were having a sale and bought a greenish-grey mid-length silk skirt with parachute pockets and a light grey silk top. all 50% off! yummss. the materials are to die for and it's always lovely to support local designers. definitely good stuff.

i donated half of my wardrobe getting ready for the greyhound annual sale

i'm beginning to fall in love with jeanette winterson. i'm reading gut symmetries now and i love the passages when stella finds out her husband is having an affair. it's that universal truth of similar pain and suffering that strikes me most. i am not unique or special. i am only human and it's okay to be in pain and suffer. and so, i finished my first short story. i'm still editing it and plan to submit it for the commonwealth short story competition. the title is, the lover. i imagine them fucking and of course, i imagine killing them, him and his lover. it makes me feel a little better and a little more sad. but i like the story. and perhaps, one day, i will publish it here.

i'm running away.

Jilted by Sylvia Plath

My thoughts are crabbed and sallow,
My tears like vinegar,
Or the bitter blinking yellow
Of an acetic star.

Tonight the caustic wind, love,
Gossips late and soon,
And I wear the wry-faced pucker of
The sour lemon moon.

While like an early summer plum,
Puny, green, and tart,
Droops upon its wizened stem
My lean, unripened heart.

Mad Girl's Love Song by Sylvia Plath

"I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead;
I lift my lids and all is born again.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)

The stars go waltzing out in blue and red,
And arbitrary blackness gallops in:
I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead.

I dreamed that you bewitched me into bed
And sung me moon-struck, kissed me quite insane.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)

God topples from the sky, hell's fires fade:
Exit seraphim and Satan's men:
I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead.

I fancied you'd return the way you said,
But I grow old and I forget your name.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)

I should have loved a thunderbird instead;
At least when spring comes they roar back again.
I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)"

"Would you still love me if I were old and saggy?"

the curious case of benjamin button (9/10) - i wish people knew more about the people that make films and not only the actors that act in them. david fincher is one of those geniuses that would never be as famous as pitt or blanchett but are the stuff of art and brilliance. he is clearly one of my favourite directors and even with a short filmography like his, he is one of the top directors. each film is selectively and lovingly chosen and directed - se7en, the game, fight club, panic room, zodiac.

tccobb is a magical story of a boy who is born old and grows younger. pitt, blanchett and swinton were all brilliant and i sobbed at so many parts of the movie, my makeup was ruined. yes, the movie feels like a big budget hollywood churnout with a-list actors and amazing special effects but fincher makes it different. it's that talent for telling a story, of choosing the right words and scenes to capture an image that touches you. a must-watch and top of my list for the next bunch of blu-rays.

"Benjamin, we're meant to lose the people we love. How else would we know how important they are to us"

"If it wasn't for Ram or Allah, we'd still have a mother."

slumdog millionaire (8.5/10) ***some spoilers*** - it could possibly win, looking at this horrible, depressing money climate. people need hope, inspiration, a better future to look forward to. and this movie gives it all. that it IS possible, to get the girl and the money. only thing, the oscars don't work that way. or so i think. maybe if he didn't win the money, or the girl became a total whore, and she died etc, then possibly it would win. yes, i'm depressing that way. inspirational movies are nice but at the end of the day, millions still live in slums, millions exploited, millions suffer because fate deals a different hand. it is a very good film - danny boyle is a brilliant sort of director, always exploring different themes and subject matters - trainspotting, millions, sunshine, 28 days later, the beach, a life less ordinary etc and slumdog is on par with the classic trainspotting. honestly, i hope it doesn't win... i do thrive on negativity.

i should go home early more often. yesterday, i reached home at 5pm. i threw on shorts, went down to ntuc and stocked up on juice, milk, veggies, fruits, ham and yoghurt. then i handwashed my delicate blouses. lit my candles. cleaned the floors. had a good hot shower. cooked udon with prawns and greens in miso soup. topped with a fried egg. it was yummy. then i sat down and finally watched blade runner. i have the 5-disc super collector's version in bluray!!! *drool lust* i started off with the 2007 director's cut. i have 4 more versions to go... plus tons of specials. but i love blade runner and i'm toying with naming my future son, deckard. haha.

now that i am my own, i cannot imagine moving back to my parents' home anymore. there is that undefined space of solace that is hard to describe.

doubt (8.5/10) ***some spoilers*** - everything is surprisingly decent this year. doubt is a tightly directed and written movie by john patrick shanley, around a conflict between a catholic priest, father flynn (philip seymour hoffman) and nun, sister aloysius (meryl streep). father f is suspected of having an inappropriate relationship with a male student and sister a accuses him with no absolute proof. the acting was excellent and streep does deserve the best actress crown. main themes include sexual abuse, non-progressive religion and racism.

what's more revealing to me was the subjugation of women in religion. i am sympathetic with streep. one has to resort to alternative means when the only "proper" channel was to report it to another male who would most likely cover the incident up (as in many real sexual abuse cases in the catholic church).

nuns answered to priests. priests to their monsignors, and bishops and the pope and then, of course god. god obviously being male, since religion was created, written and controlled by males. this is not peculiar to catholicism or christianity. it is very obvious in islam and less so, in buddhism. this may seem surprising, but in buddhism, most of what female nuns do is just serve the monks. they hardly get the opportunity to study scripture or advanced religous texts or partake in main religious duties or ceremonies. more shocking, is the idea that women could never gain enlightenment. even if it wasn't true, this concept of enlightenment, the proposition that one could not be free or attain happiness because of one's gender is appalling and very disturbing. and maybe, my answer to the next person that asks me why i do not believe in god, would simply be, because god is male.

there are no easy answers in this film. a fellow cinema patron posed this question to my friend and i at the end of the movie - "so do you think he did it?" and i answered him, "it doesn't matter". because that wasn't the point of the movie and also, we will never know. are we cynics like sister a? or sympathetic, trusting souls like sister james, played beautifully by amy adams (although i keep expecting her to break out in song)? more revealingly, we find out at the end of the movie, that sister a's suspicions will not be investigated and instead of being reviewed by the church, father f was given a promotion. virtue is indeed underrated.

***i'm not entirely a supporter of sister a. i am equally sympathetic to father f who may very well be innocent. watch the movie and decide for yourself!

milk (8/10) - so far, so good. no terribly disappointing crap like the 2008 oscars. i still cannot believe michael clayton was up for best picture. it was SO bad. anyway, back to milk. gus van sant has always been a semi-favourite on-off director. goodwill hunting was good, same with finding forrester. i watched elephant when i was in my art-house-crazy stage, so i remembered it being "experimentally delicious". anyway, last days and paranoid park were totally unwatchable. so i'm pretty surprised he churned out milk. haha corny! but yeah, it was decent, good solid storytelling. casting of sean penn, emile hirsh, james franco and josh brolin were spot-on. some parts got a little draggy but it was interesting enough throughout and insightful into the origins of the san francisco gay scene. i loved sean penn's cheekiness and i found that straightforward unabashed flirting totally refreshing. i mean, i can't go up to a straight guy and tell him i love his butt in that jeans. i wish i could do that without sounding like a pervert. we straight people have it hard. why can't we just honestly, openly flirt? yeah, it's too long a review. go watch it! its run is ending.

i had this sudden thought after what happened last month - that i've strayed from my path. somehow, along the way, i forgot about the enlightened me, the self that was non-self, the being that was free and happy. not that i wasn't happy. i was very happy. but i would like now, to return to my path. to meditate and be loving-kindness. and attain a happiness that is clear, aware and deep within.

Julie Delpy - An Ocean Apart
@ 3:51 PM
Now we are together, sitting outside in the sunshine
But soon we'll be apart and soon it'll be night at noon
Now things are fine, the clouds are far away up in the sky
But soon I'll be on a plane and soon you'll feel the cold rain

You promised to stay in touch when we're apart
You promised before I left that you'll always love me.
Time goes by, people cry, everything goes too fast.
Now we have each other enjoying each moment with one another
But soon I'll be miles away and soon the phone will be our only way

You promised we'll never break up over the telephone
You said our love was stronger than an ocean apart
Time goes by and people lie, everything goes too fast.

Let's not fool ourselves in vain, this far away trip will give us pain
We'll have to be so strong to keep our love from going wrong
Distance will make us cold, even put our love on hold
But soon we'll meet again and soon it'll be bright at noon again

You promised not to lose faith in our love when I'm away
You promised so much to me but now you've left me
We go by and then we lie all this time we wasted
Time goes by, people lie everything goes too fast.

Time went by, and then we died, everything went too fast.

changeling (8/10) - although clint eastwood has been churning oscar-worthy flicks regularly, i haven't caught most of them surprisingly. after changeling, i think i might just go catch up on eastwood. based loosely on the wineville chicken coop murders, the movie concentrates on the story of christine collins and her missing son walter collins. jolie plays the role convincingly enough with tolerable over-acting. she's quite unrecognisable which is good. generally, a good story with good supporting actors and excellent direction. themes explored include corruption, deception, abuse of power, feminism, serial killings etc. it's not a 9, cause it wasn't wow. it's a good movie and perhaps, eastwood like scorsese don't direct wow movies, they're good and decent. but just not wow enough.
