"i think it's a mistake to lose one's sense of death, even one's fear of death. isn't death the boundary we need? doesn't it give a precious texture to life, a sense of definition? you have to ask yourself whether anything you do in this life would have beauty and meaning without the knowledge you carry a final line, a border or limit."

"we were the children of innocent consumerism and the inheritors of the freedoms won by our seditious elders in the late sixties. we had a free, superior and somewhat lazy education. we weren't much restrained by morality or religion. music, dancing and conscienceless fucking were our totems. we boasted that we were the freest there'd ever been."

Ajahn Brahm + India etc...
Sunday, October 16, 2005 @ 9:41 PM
ahhhh!!! met ajahn brahm, got him to sign my book and got his advice on how to gain enlightenment. went to khor meng san park monastery yesterday for a talk by ajahn brahm. talk was 730pm. we got there about 7pm and there he was outside the hall, quietly sitting on a chair hunched over signing books as people queued up. due to saufen's, amos' and my good karma (haha), we met him outside, waited a mere 10 minutes, and there i was kneeling in front of ajahn brahm... talking to him!!! yay!!!

the first thing he said to me was, thank you for waiting patiently. so sweet!!!

then i asked, bante (teacher), how do i gain enlightenment?

he looked at me, smiled and laughed. how to gain enlightenment? read the book! i reply that i have read it. then he said, be content, be still. and have fun! enlightenment is fun! and he laughed again... aww... what a sweetie.

i remember that when i was lining up to talk to him, i was trembling. was so nervous. i wanted to cry. was going to cry already! (i know... damn jialat right.) can't help it, i love his book! the book was one of the first buddhist books i read.. he wrote on my book:

To Michele,

With mega metta from

Ajahn Brahm

metta is loving-kindness

Then he said, may you be happy and well.

Awww................ he's such a darling. Also, for those friends who are going... eh... michele aren't you catholic? I will reply, well, first and foremost I'm a human being - I love, I care, I try to be patient, giving, kind and understanding. I try to do good, not harm living things. Isn't that more important? Than whether I am catholic or buddhist or hindu or muslim? Peel off the colour of our skin, our features, accents, clothes, religions, educational backgrounds and we're the same basic essence.

leaving for india on tuesday... for a whole month! yay! will try to update as much as possible... ;) hugs. love.

may you be well and happy,
michele
